An example of trust’s essence, as we practice
it, is found in a story told by a photographer of Miles Davis. Jim
Marshall, the photographer, was trying to get Miles attention backstage
after a performance in San Francisco in 1962. He wanted to give Miles a
print of John Coltrane, taken in Coltrane's garden. Jim had no luck
reaching Miles, who was notoriously ornery, so he pushed through, gave
Miles the print and walked away.
“Hey Marshall”, Jim heard. He turned
around. “How come you never take pictures like this of me?”
“Because you
never let me.”
Jim Marshall became a trusted and often exclusive
photographer for Miles. His signature, that allowed him to create a
portfolio of iconic and masterful images of both jazz and rock musicians,
was being granted total access. Trust.
